Regional Flavours showcases tastes of the Moreton Bay Region

The tastes of the Moreton Bay Region were served up to local foodies at the annual Regional Flavours event, held from 15-16 July at Brisbane’s South Bank Parklands.

Attracting more than 80,000 patrons to the riverside venue, the two-day program was jam-packed with fresh Queensland produce, market stalls, live cooking demonstrations and celebrity chef book signings.

This year, Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT) partnered with Regional Flavours, along with ambassador Paul West of ‘River Cottage Australia’ fame, to help capture the best the Moreton Bay Region has to offer.

Fresh catch: a seafood focus

When it comes to culinary delights, the Moreton Bay Region is synonymous with seafood and, more notably, the internationally renowned Moreton Bay Bug.

For the first time in Regional Flavours’ nine-year history there will be a seafood focus, capitalising on the growing Chinese market and appealing to patrons of the future Queen’s Wharf Development set for the Brisbane CBD in 2022.

With seafood front and centre, MBRIT will build on the momentum from the event to further embed the ‘food experience’ as a key element of the Moreton Bay Region’s destination branding.

This will be done through ongoing marketing campaigns and event involvement to help position the Moreton Bay Region as a true visitor destination for foodies.

Paul West: from River Cottage to the Moreton Bay Region

Known for his innovative approaches to farming on hit TV series 'River Cottage Australia', celebrity chef Paul West has come on board as Moreton Bay Region Advocate and Sustainable Seafood Expert.

With a focus on sustainable practices, Paul helped to develop a ‘Tastes of Moreton Bay’ menu, and presented two cooking demonstrations featuring local produce at Regional Flavours including on-stage producer talks with Savige's Seafood and Ocean View Estates.

“Sustainable seafood is all about plating up delicious, fresh meals, while taking into consideration the long-term impacts on the environment,” said Paul.

“Known for its temperate climate and seaside locale, the Moreton Bay Region is brimming with possibilities when it comes to locally sourced produce and seafood.

“As ambassador for the region, I will demonstrate the simple, yet mouth-watering, ways to prepare and cook seafood at landmark events like Regional Flavours.”

In the lead up to, during and after Regional Flavours, MBRIT ran a series of competitions across various digital platforms, with the winners receiving exclusive bayside dining and hinterland food experiences.

Proving a huge success, over 2,200 entries were received, providing invaluable exposure for the region and participating businesses.

In total, 13 regions were represented at Regional Flavours in various sites throughout the South Bank Parklands, including The Picnic Patch, The Hunting Club, Queensland Taste, Sweet Escape, and Little Farmer’s Day Out.

Over the course of the weekend, local tastes were served up at the ‘Flavours of Moreton Bay’ food stall run by Sandstone Point Hotel, as well as local berries from Caboolture-based My Berries.

Morty the Moreton Bay Bug was also on show at the Visit Moreton Bay Region information booth.
