Local clubs share in almost $300,000 in community grants

There’s still 14 weeks until Santa comes to town, but Christmas has come early for 27 local clubs who’ll share in nearly $300,000 grant funding.

Mayor Peter Flannery said he was already looking forward to the Moreton Bay Symphony Orchestra’s (MBSO) Christmas concert after they scored $2,650.

“This latest round of funding from our Community Grants Program brings our investment into community clubs and local sporting groups to nearly $8 million since the pandemic began,” he said.

“I promised Council would do everything we could to make sure no one slips through the cracks, and I hope this latest round of funding will bring some early Christmas cheer to clubs in need.

“While we focus on economic recovery, I believe it’s just as important to keep our mental health in check.

“So, I’m thrilled events are back on in Moreton Bay as an important way of bringing family, friends, and even strangers together.”

MBSO President Eve Brown said the group aims to bring quality music to the Moreton Bay community and develop and showcase local talent while doing so.

“This grant will go towards commissioning and staging a trumpet concerto by local composer, Tom Green, which we plan to premiere at our Christmas concert ‘Santa and the Symphony’ on Sunday December 6 at the Redcliffe Entertainment Centre,” she said.

“We’d like to give a huge thank you to Council for the $2,650 in funding to make it possible for us to share this new work of Tom’s with the community after such a tough year.

“Our annual Christmas concert always brings such joy to the faces of the community and this will be especially poignant this year.”

Mayor Flannery said five local projects, including MBSO’s Christmas concert, received funding in this round of the Regional Art Development Fund.

“Additionally, we’re helping 14 community groups to cover the costs of much needed facilities upgrades including air conditioning installation for the Caboolture Historical Society in time for summer, building new softball dugouts for the Redcliffe Leagues Softball Association, and installing a ramp for wheelchair users at the Moreton Bay Boat Club.

“We’re also supporting nine activities and events, including the Rotary Club of Bribe Island’s mental health awareness fundraising walk and the Brisbane Basketball Association’s beginner basketball clinics in Moreton Bay.”
