Export Market Development Grants (EMDG)


Export Market Development Grants is aimed at exporters who are aiming to increase their international sales with reimbursements of up to 50% of promotional expenses to a maximum of $150,000.

*Promotional expenses incurred must be at least $15,000.

The Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) reimburses expenses incurred for export promotional activities to existing and potential Australian exporters, and may include:

  • overseas representation expenses
  • marketing consultant expenses
  • free samples expenses
  • trade fairs, seminars, in-store promotions expenses
  • promotional literature and advertising expenses
  • overseas buyers expenses
  • registration and / or insurance of eligible intellectual property expenses

Funding is provided to compensate eligible export businesses up to 50% of their promotional expenses above $5,000, up to a maximum of $150,000, provided total eligible expenses incurred amount to at least $15,000.

Each successful applicant may be entitled for up to eight consecutive grants.


Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, you must have carried on export promotion activities during the financial year you are applying for. You must also:

  • have a total income of less than $50 million
  • be the principal (rather than agent) in the export of products (goods, services, intellectual property etc.)
  • promote products to residents of other countries

How to Apply

Applicants must complete and submit their online application, including all required documents, between 1 July and midnight Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT) 2 December 2019, or use an approved EMDG Quality Incentive Program (QIP) Consultant who can lodge a claim on their behalf until midnight AEDT 3 March 2020.

To use the online application form you must hold, or apply for, an AUSkey. You will need your ABN and personal tax file number to do this. Visit the AUSkey website to register for an AUSkey and follow the prompts.

You will be prompted to submit relevant documents such as financial statements and information that explains your business and your product or service during the application process.

Documents for expenses and export earnings should be available for audit verification. To find out more about the documents you need to have available, you can attend an EMDG coaching session in your area.

Deadline to Apply


Applications open on 1 July each year. If you are doing the application yourself, you need to lodge your application by 2 December. If you are using an approved EMDG consultant, they need to lodge your application by 3 March.
