Leanne Kemp

As the founder of multiple businesses, Leanne Kemp knows a thing or two abour startups and entrepreneurship. Her latest startup, Everledger, looks to apply blockchain technology to industries where transparency, trust, and provenance matter most e.g. diamonds, wine, art and more. Everledger recently raised $10 million in fudning and now employs more than 70 staff across offices in five countries.

Leanne Kemp currently serves on the IBM Blockchain Platform board of advisors and has over 20 years experience in tech. She was recently appointed the new Queensland Chief Entrepreneur, taking over the role from Steve Baxter, and has said she would bring a global focus to the new role.

Following Leanne Kemp's presentation, she will be joined on-stage by a panel of entrepreneurs and innovators to discuss the topic "Using modern technology in business and day-to-day life".

Sam Hussey is Chief Executive Officer of Lightweave, a rapidly expanding experiential agency focused on Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and New Technology. In 2018 Sam took out the Singapore Arline’s Young Business Person of The Year at the Lord Mayors Business Awards and was listed as one of the Top 20 under 40 Business Leaders and Entrepreneurs by the Courier Mail’s Queensland Business Monthly. Lightweave has been behind numerous world first experiences and works with client within Australia and across the globe. With over 15 years within advertising and entertainment, Sam has work across a range of industries and clients both within Australia and Internationally. As a true-blue Brisbanite, Sam was committed to building-up Brisbane’s tech space here rather than abroad, understanding the creative and technical potential within the city he has always called home.

Nicholas Therkelsen co-founded Max Kelsen in 2015 to provide big data and machine learning services to clients large and small. In his position as CEO, Nicholas is responsible for designing and executing strategic vision, project design and management, fiscal and legal governance, and team building. Prior to this, Nick was consulting for companies across a range of industries to assist with their technology requirements. Nick holds a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Economics from the University of Queensland. Nick has a broad range of expertise spanning business, economics, sales, management and law. Nick has a deep theoretical and applied understanding of cutting-edge machine learning techniques, and has been widely recognised as a domain expert in this field. He is a regular speaker at artificial intelligence meetups around the country, and also at conferences such as Gartner ITXPO, NSW Gov DC, Urbanity and IBM Think 2018. Nick also co-founded Cityshape in 2016, an application focussed on aggregating property development planning data and serves as its CTO. Likewise, in 2017, Nick co-founded cognitiveCX, a platform for enterprises to analyse and process unstructured data from any source.

Brent Richards (AI and the disruption of healthcare talk) – Medical Director of Innovation & Director of Critical Care Research at Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service

Dr Erica Mealy joined the USC Business School at the University of the Sunshine Coast in February 2016. Erica is a lecturer in Information and Communications Technology in the School of Business. As an accomplished software engineer with 14 years industrial experience alongside her 15 years university teaching experience Dr Erica Mealy has a passion for sharing her drive for making and coding to inspire the next generation of innovators and professionals. Erica has been writing code for over 20 years and has experience in areas as diverse as sports analysis, train control, safety critical software, embedded electronics, databases and the web.

Erica has worked with the Queensland Government Department of Education and Training, State Library Queensland, Digital Careers Australia, Queensland College of Art at Griffith University and in outreach for University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology in addition to her position at the University of the Sunshine Coast. She was also the recipient of a prestigious Google Computer Science 4 High Schools grant in 2015, and a finalist for the Women in Technology Rising Star award in the same year. Erica’s research interests fall into the broad theme of applied user-centered design. Current projects relate to interface and systems design for the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, a user-centered design approach to Entrepreneurship on the Sunshine Coast, wearable technologies, and software engineering support tool design.
