Balancing business demands: The Hon. Julia Gillard AC speaks at conference event

Posted 29 May 2018

When it comes to business, and life in general, you should be ruthless about your priorities and have some clarity around your sense of purpose.

That’s according to former Australian Prime Minister, The Hon. Julia Gillard AC, who presented to an audience of 300 business owners and industry leaders at Eatons Hill Hotel as part of the Business Moreton Bay Region Conference Series on Friday, 25 May.

Ms Gillard was sworn in as Australia’s 27th Prime Minister in June 2010 and served in the office until June 2013.

She has received world-wide attention for her advocacy on the treatment of women in professional and public life, and is now Patron of Camfed, the Campaign for Female Education. She is also Chair of Beyond Blue.

During her presentation and Q&A session with MC Heather Foord, where she shared some of the pertinent moments on her leadership journey, Ms Gillard spoke about the need to differentiate between ‘important’ and ‘urgent’ demands.

“You have to carve out quiet time in order to shape agenda and drive change,” Ms Gillard said.

“And you don’t have to be Prime Minister to experience this,” she said, noting the constant pressures facing business owners and operators in the digital age.

Her advice for up-and-coming business leaders? Ms Gillard said they should be thinking about community, politics, and engagement “beyond a virtual sense”.

“The bonds of community-building and nation-building is done person-to-person,” she said. “I want to say to the next generation: don’t forget that bit.”

Community-building and networking is at the core of the Business Moreton Bay Region Conference Series, which offers professional development workshop sessions, followed by a luncheon featuring internationally recognised speakers.

The next Conference Series event will be held on Friday, 10 August at Redcliffe Leagues Club with Queensland Chief Entrepreneur and Shark Tank judge, Steve Baxter, as keynote speaker. It is being delivered by sponsor Telstra, together with event partners Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism and Moreton Bay Regional Council.
